Voice & Data Circuits:

Voice Lines

Voice lines are delivered by Carriers (AT&T, Cimco, Verizon, etc.) in two ways - POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) and PRI (Primary Rate Interface).

If you have an office with 10 employees or less, POTS line service may be sufficient. However, with caller ID, voicemail, call waiting, etc., this service may not be cost efficient.

A PRI is a T1 circuit that provides 23 useable channels. These channels can be used simultaneously to make and receive calls. There is no limit ot the amount of phone numbers you can have on a PRI - you can even have multiple area codes. Called ID is included in the monthly charge of a PRI circuit. If you have 12 or more phone lines you should benefit by replacing them with a PRI.

Data Circuits

Point-to-point T1 is a private line capable of 1.544 Mbps in bandwidth between two locations.

MPLS - Multi Layered Protocol Switching. MPLS circuits are becoming the norm. Due to their realtively low cost they are rapidly replacing point-to-point T1 circuits. MPLS circuits can be thought of as a circle where a point-to-point T1 is a straight line.
